Blue Sky, Red Canoe is an easy reading exploration of paddling the Red Deer River and a reflection on the history, geology, geography, and stories of the river and its badlands. The book comments on life and nature from a long-time lawyer's view point, and touches on the interface of homesteaders and Indigenous peoples in Alberta through stories and memoirs of paddling the Red Deer River.
2026 marks the 70th anniversary of a unique event in northern Canada's nautical history. In the summer sailing season of 1956, first a Northern Transportation Company tug, the MV Clearwater sank in a terrible storm on Lake Athabasca. Then not two months later the Sandy Jane, a very similar tug operated by Yellowknife Transportation Company sank to the bottom of Great Slave Lake, the deepest lake in North America. Two teenagers died and three young twenty-somethings were deeply affected. In the same season, two teenagers went north to begin their long and successful careers in the marine business north of 60.
