I am progressing on a series of stories and historical information about northern marine transportation. These photos reflect some of the history of the time of the last HB Co boatmen.
Upper Red Deer River and Bighorn Creek, Ya-Ha-Tinda
One of my favourite features in A Métis Man's Dream; From Traplines to Tugboats in Canada's North is the photography. Especially in the glossy, deluxe, colour version (available through my website and the books stores and museums listed in the website), northern images can be so bold and evocative. Some of the photos which "missed the cut" will be posted every week or so in this section. Some of the better photos from the book will also be offered.

I hope these pictures give you a sense of life in the boreal north, that is, below the treeline. Two, for contrast, show the Arctic Coast in autumn.

All photos are from the Gill family collection, except where otherwise credited.

Gestur Gudmunson -Gordon Gill's father-in-law used this Bombardier snowcat to get to their winter ice fishing grounds. The caboose was their living quarters while out on the ice of Great Slave Lake.

Hay River in flood, 1963 credit NWT Archives. Contrast this to photos of the very dry 2023 when the river mouth contained a large sand island. Apparently, the flood of 2022 was worse than the 1963 calamity
